The Golden Ratio in art.

Mathematics and art often seem to be such a great distance apart – rational numbers and formulas versus meaningful images, colours and concepts. If you blended mathematics and art, would they collide? Not in the case of the Golden Ratio. In fact, it is used as an ideal unit of measurement that seems to form the basis of all beauty.

The Golden Ratio (indicated by the Greek letter Áâ€¢, phi) means that a segment is cut into two unequal parts, where the long part is 1.618 times greater than the short part, and the total segment is 1.618 times larger than the long part. Using this guideline would lead to a harmonious ratio, which is preferred aesthetically.

Leonardo da Vinci, Piet Mondriaan, Georges Seurat and Botticelli: they all used the Golden Ratio in their paintings. Dyvsign applies this artistic theory in her latest collection, in which the Golden Ratio is indicated in the jewel by gold plating the smallest part with gold leaf.

Example: When you divide Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus in two pieces, measured from the top of the shell, the upper piece is exactly 1.618 times greater than the lower piece. Also, the distance between the navel of Venus and her left great toe is 1,618 times greater than the distance between her navel and the top of her head. The Golden Ratio has also been applied by Leonardo da Vinci in his Mona Lisa.
